Presidents Message

October brings a slew of public events to the Hill, and there’s no better time to meet your neighbors, learn about the history of the Hill, and work for its better future! Mark your calendars and join the community at these events:

At the next Boosters meeting on September 30, all three candidates for District Attorney – incumbent DA Terrence Hallinan and challengers Bill Fazio and Kamala Harris – will join us for a District Attorney Candidates Forum. Come hear what they have to say about the future of law enforcement and prosecution in the City, and ask them questions of your own. (Most questions will be asked by the debate moderators; if you wish to submit a question for any or all of the candidates, we recommend e-mailing it to president@potreroboosters.org or bringing it in writing to the meeting on the 30th.)

On Sunday, October 5 at 7 pm, four of the major candidates for Mayor of San Francisco – Angela Alioto, Tom Ammiano, Matt Gonzalez, and Susan Leal – will join us for a Mayoral Candidates Forum at the Thick House, 1695 18th Street near Carolina Street. (Candidate Gavin Newsom has declined to participate; he is skipping a large number of community forums in his campaign.) With all the City attention on Potrero Hill and District 10, the next mayor will have our neighborhood’s issues on their front burner throughout their administration; this is our chance to hear the candidates on our issues in a direct and open environment. (Most questions will be asked by the debate moderators; if you wish to submit a question for any or all of the candidates, we recommend e-mailing it to president@potreroboosters.org or bringing it in writing to the meeting on the 5th.)

Saturday, October 18 is an absolutely HUGE day on the Hill, with public events all day and evening, thanks to the efforts of Enola D. Maxwell Middle School of the Arts and the Potrero Hill Association of Merchants and Businesses. In the morning, there’s a big community cleanup at the Enola D. Maxwell Middle School (also, check out their book fair on the second weekend of the month). Volunteers are needed and welcome, of course! During the day, there’s the annual Potrero Hill Neighborhood House Community Festival and Street Fair on Southern Heights at DeHaro, in front of the Nabe. From the festival, you can also get started on the SF Community Power Cooperative’s Treasure Trek, leading you on a prize-filled tour of the Hill’s local merchants.

And in the evening, there’s the fourth annual Potrero Hill History Night, presented by the Potrero Hill Association of Merchants and Businesses at the (freshly re-painted and cleaned!) Maxwell Middle School, with the usual surprising mix of old-timer interviews, photographs from the Potrero Hill Archives Project, and multi-media presentations.

And speaking of the Merchants Association, be sure to pick up the October 1 issue of the San Francisco Bay Guardian – there’s a pull-out walking map of Potrero Hill merchants in the center of the issue, thanks to the generosity of the Guardian and the Merchants. It’s suitable for saving, and sharing with visitors!

That’s a wild month, and it doesn’t even include Potrero Hill Open Studios the weekend of October 18-19, or Farley’s Halloween Pet Parade the following weekend! Alright, now it does. . .

Other updates on other issues:

Revised Booster bylaws. The Potrero Boosters Neighborhood Association bylaws have been basically unchanged, and in many ways unreviewed, since the mid-1980s. After a long review process, including discussions at the last two Booster meetings, w e think we are finally ready to adopt the revised bylaws. The latest discussions and changes from the last Boosters meeting are now online at the Booster website, potreroboosters.org, and we’ll discuss the last changes at the membership meetings this month. We really hope to vote on the changes this month, since some changes affect membership categories and dues for 2004. Check it out when you can, and feel free to ask questions or raise red flags about anything you find at any time.

Membership. September is the start of the Boosters 2004 membership drive; between now and February 2004, we want to double our membership and extend our reach into more of the Hill’s communities. One of the simplest things we can do as members is the most effective – bring a neighbor to a meeting, or show them the list of issues for 2003 at our website, potreroboosters.org. There’s gotta be something on the list that you can work on with us – so GET INVOLVED! Contact me or Pat Cleveland, Vice President for Membership – our contact information is on the flip side of this newsletter.

Thanks as always for thinking about our organization, and our neighborhood. See you on the Hill in October!
