She writes:
“I came to the Potrero Hill Boosters meeting a few months ago to talk about Jackson Recreational Park issues. I think overall the situation has improved a LOT! I'm very pleased so far. Specifically what has happened is:
Signs along park perimeter were put up stating that no overnight habitation is allowed (thanks to Officer Paul Swiatko)
Live Oak School has complained to police about people living in their vehicle (with some coaxing from me)
Police are actually enforcing the signs a lot of the time (thanks again to Swiatko). The number of vehicles living around the park has gone from 15 down to around 3 or 4.
Daniel Lau, owner of the commercial loft building at 1501 Mariposa, has gotten his cleaning crew to sweep the sidewalk and street 2 to 3 times per week. This has helped the litter problem quite a bit.
“In short, the cleanliness, safety, and overall neighborhood environment has improved significantly. Let's hope it stays that way!
“I really want to thank you and the Potrero Boosters for giving me and other neighbors the information that helped get us these good results. I also really want to point out that this would not have been possible without the help of Officer Paul Swiatko.
“Look forward to attending next month's meeting.”
Improving the quality of life in a neighborhood can be a complicated process of political action, where you're surrounded by experienced adversaries and your only weapon is free speech; or it can be as simple as sweeping the sidewalk in front of your business, or learning the names of everyone in the six-unit building next door. For Patty Lawlor, the Boosters were able to help quickly and easily because we've worked with people at the Department of Parks and Recreation and the SFPD for years, and those departments know of our longstanding interest in improving our community.
Since 1926, the Potrero Boosters have worked to bring better parks, schools, and services to the neighborhood, and to bring the neighbors of Potrero Hill together. We aim to be your voice in the neighborhood, and the neighborhood's voice.
But a neighborhood organization is really only the sum of its members, their experiences, and their shared vision of what their community can be; so we are seeking a larger and more diverse membership, made up of all the communities of the Hill, to bring that shared vision into 2004.
Bring a neighbor to the meeting, or show them the list of Issues at our website, potreroboosters.org. There's gotta be something on the list that you can work on with us GET INVOLVED, and let's keep the Hill as one of the proudest neighborhoods in the City!
Best of all bring a neighbor to the Boosters Holiday Party, Sunday afternoon, December 14 at the Metronome Ballroom's Block Party!
Thanks as always for thinking about our organization, and our neighborhood.
See you on the Hill!
